Μια εξαιρετική ευκαιρία για την εκμάθηση των πουλιών και την απόκτηση δεξιοτήτων και γνώσεων στο πεδίο για την ορνιθοπανίδα προσφέρεται από την Ελληνική Ορνιθολογική Εταιρία (ΕΟΕ) στο σταθμό των Αντικυθήρων αυτήν την Άνοιξη (Μάρτιος-Μάιος 2019). A. Bird Ringing opportunity in Greece - open call for volunteering, Spring 2019 (end of March – end of May).

Antikythira Bird Observatory (ABO), run by the Hellenic Ornithological Society / BirdLife Greece, is organizing a bird ringing campaign, supervised by the Hellenic Bird Ringing Center. We hereby invite you to participate in our bird ringing campaign (either as a ringer or a helper). Volunteer applications for the spring season of 2019 have just opened. 

Volunteers will mainly be involved in the bird ringing routines but also participate in other bird & biodiversity survives, research projects and habitat restoration activities depending on their skills.

B. Join Antikythira Bird Observatory and improve your field skills! Three (unpaid) internship positions are available for this spring season (end of March –end of May).

Position descriptions

1. Radio-tracking of staging Woodchat Shrikes (Lanius senator) at Antikythira:

The project involves the trapping and deployment with light-weight radio transmitters of approximately 10 Woodchat Shrikes. The tracking will take place with a hand hold antenna using the homing method. Apart from the detailed localisation of the birds during they stay the description of their habitat use will take place.

Requirements: ability to work long hours under adverse weather conditions (heat and sun). No identification skills are required even though would be beneficiary.

2. Automated moon-watching

Running and evaluating an automated moon-watching system. The responsibilities include:

• Training in operatating the device

• Ensuring proper activation of the device every evening (when applicable)

• Taking care of the device from external elements (e.g. covering device in case of rain) 3) Acting on notifications sent by the device (in case of occasional malfunction)

• Collecting the recorded data files and loading them onto the provided image processing software

• Manually verifying samples from files to identify any cases which were not detected automatically. Issuing a report of migration including other data points collected through other means such as local and distant weather conditions

Requirements: Ability to work late hours and independently. Good computing skills are needed.  

3. Bird surveys

This position involves the mapping of all possible territories of raptors that are present on the island of Antikythira and their possible nesting sites. Observations will be made from specific view points and the trajectory and behavior of the birds will be mapped using well defined protocols. Additionally a set of camera traps will be set at fresh water ponds at the island in order to evaluate the importance and use of fresh water by staging birds. The intern will be responsible for replacing batteries and memory cards as well as archiving and making a preliminary scanning of the recordings.

Requirements:  Able to work well with others but also independently. Basic raptor identification skills. Good computing skills.
